Thesis committee meeting done, PhD stress temperarily peaking and now subsiding…

I had my third and last committee meeting today, YAY.

So basically how this whole deal works is, I do my research, every two months I speak with my professor for an hour to ensure my research is on track, and we discuss my results and next steps. Because my work is applied science with an easily identifiable goal, the steps are generally obvious. Then I go back to work for the next two months.

Lately, the lab has hit some sort of weird anti-productivity wave where everyone’s stuff is not working, and the longer you go with having nothing work, the more annoying life becomes. Life is currently fairly annoying, because nothing has been working, but that is science.

So I have been working for three and a half years now. Every year we bring together my committee, which is my professor and two additional experts, and we go through it all again. Multiple perspectives, multiple opinions, professors who change their minds and forget things, standard drill. Its stressful. It was two hours, which is twice as long as my final defense will be.

Today we decided that the remaining experiments will achieve my objectives, and that we do not need any further meetings, so, the next time we all come together will be my PhD defense, in likely 6-10 months time. Which is extremely, extremely exciting. An end is in sight.

So, nap time for tired jenna’s, look forward to real adventures and updates of some past ones soon, because life has not only been all work 🙂
