Snowshoeing between Christmas and New Years Eve

So our two day ice climbing course was cancelled due to crappy ice, damn Föhn melting everything, and of course the next best option is to go snowshoeing! Well, whatever it was the option we picked!

So we have been spending a lot of time checking out destinations quite close to Zurich, you don’t need to go to the other side of the Alps to get to some nice places, so we went to check out Fronalpstock, having essentially hiked entirely around it, but never up it. We snagged some slightly unnecessary snowshoes in Stoos, and headed up. And up, and up, and up… and up. It was pretty much straight up 650m, which for the first 300 was fairly boring monotonous walking up steep snow hills. But the second half was pretty cool, lots of fun views, trees, and other mountains. There was a fairly entertaining temperature difference along the way too, from straight up boiling sun to chilly nippy summit wind. Image

Views over Grosser and Kleiner Mythen halfway up.

Chilly windy summit! Rocking the new down coat I got for myself for Christmas.

On the way home we were treated to some amazing views, was really great to be back in the mountains!

About adventuresunplugged

The world is a really cool place. I moved to Zurich almost three years ago to start my PhD, and have really enjoyed the different opportunites living close to the Swiss alps offered. This blog is about some of my adventures, climbing, mountaineering, rock climbing, traveling... life in general! Wow, haven't updated this bad boy in some time! While the above is still true I have gone on to finish the PhD, so that is Dr Unplugged to you. I also have landed a job in Switzerland and will be shortly moving to Geneva. Clearly I have some adventures ahead left to explore with you guys along for company!
