A less depressing post so you all don’t worry too much :-). That week was a really low point, but I have rallied and things are looking much brighter!
We had a guest on the weekend, a friend of mine who lives in nyc but was doing a course in paris. He is one of those friends you have that always make you feel like you don’t work hard enough, but he has totally earned all his success and I am quite happy with my work life balance :-D. Anyway, he was here and it was rainy in Zurich so we went into the mountains so he could snowboard and have some swiss style fun. Of course in the mountains it was snowing. A lot it turns out by the end of the day.
No, I did not try to commit suicide on skis, I rented some snowshoes and was very happy trundling around on them. Clocked some km up at 3,000m and then had lunch with the boys who were having much more snowfall related difficulties then me. After lunch we decided to play it by ear and i went off for a wander around a lake.
Now engelberg is VERY tourist friendly. Everywhere we looked were piles f asians and indians in rented snowjackets and jeans having snowball fights and loving life. People asked to take pictures with me. It was cute but it was not very “nature”. Same thig about the noise from the gondolas but i guess that is becoming a bit of a swiss complaint.
Anyway, i trudge off through fairly heavy snow around the lake. I turn a corner, and there it is, actual nature. Only about 500m from the gondolas but because of the landscape and heavy snow it blocked the music and yelling and machines. All you could see was a snow covered lake, soft hills around it, and the falling snow. I was totally alone, i was walking through heavy snow, and it was spectacular. This is what going into the mountains is about, it is about peace and silence. It is about space from work and guests and worries about health and people. Just being and enjoying and watching just being. It would have been nice with sunshine, but with the falling snow and silence it was just perfect.
I cannot wait to enjoy that on a regular basis, to enjoy that stress release and balance and enjoy just the experience. Also, it was cool to find out how waterproof my new gear was :-).
